A. Kathleen Burlew, PhD

A. Kathleen Burlew, PhD, received a PhD in social psychology from the University of Michigan. Later, she retrained in clinical psychology at Miami University (Ohio). Currently, at the University of Cincinnati, she conducts research on HIV risk reduction and substance use treatment especially for People of Color. She has coauthored/coedited four books and multiple journal articles. She previously was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Black Psychology and currently is the associate editor of the Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse. In addition, she chairs the Minority Interest Group of NIDA's Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network. In that role, she has participated in randomized clinical trials evaluating substance use interventions and published multiple articles on cultural adaptation of evidence-based interventions and culturally appropriate research methods. She and colleagues recently published an article illustrating their model, Community Collaborative Cultural Adaptation, for implementing academic/community partnerships to address community problems. In addition to her research, Burlew is the consulting psychologist to a substance use clinic where she trains doctoral students in assessing for co-occurring diagnoses. The Governor of Ohio appointed her to two (2) five-year terms on the State Board of Psychology.
