Anna L. Marsland, PhD, RN

Anna L. Marsland, PhD, RN, is a professor of psychology and chair of the biological and health psychology program in the department of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Marsland’s research focuses on bidirectional pathways linking the central nervous and immune systems in the context of physical health. Areas of research focus include the impact of psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental factors on immune parameters known to be associated with lifelong health and risk for chronic diseases of aging (cardiometabolic disease and neurocognitive decline). Recent interests focus on biological pathways linking socioeconomic inequalities to health risk and biological aging.


She directs the Behavioral Immunology Laboratory, a busy psychoneuroimmunology training center. Marsland’s research has been published in top-tier journals such as Health Psychology and Psychosomatic Medicine, and she has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health for the past 25 years. She has mentored numerous junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
