José J. Cabiya, PhD, is currently professor emeritus at Albizu University where he also served as chancellor from 2007 to 2014. Cabiya completed his BA in psychology at the University of Puerto Rico and his PhD in clinical psychology at the State University of New York at Albany. Cabiya has extensive experience developing culturally competent, evidence-based interventions and assessment instruments for Latinos. Specifically, he has directed several initiatives that focus on Latino youth at high risk for mental health problems and substance abuse in schools, including substance abuse and mental health prevention programs funded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) and the Department of Education in more than 100 schools in Puerto Rico from 2000–11.
Moreover, Cabiya was awarded a National Institutes of Health R-24 grant by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities from 2002–07 directed at developing initiatives that lead to the reduction of health disparities among Latinos. Finally, Cabiya has several publications in internationally recognized journals and book chapters on evidenced based interventions and assessment instruments culturally adapted to Latinos and has coauthored a book on assessing Latinos with James Butcher, PhD.
