Wei-Chin Hwang, PhD

Wei-Chin Hwang, PhD, is department chair and professor of clinical psychology at Claremont McKenna College. He received his PhD from the clinical psychology program at UCLA (2003), completed his predoctoral fellowship at Richmond Area Multi-Services, National Asian American Psychology Training Center, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, NIMH Psychobiology of Ethnicity Center. His research focuses on understanding and reducing mental health disparities, addressing the impact of acculturation on family relationships, improving psychotherapy outcomes, cultivating therapist cultural competency, and developing and implementing frameworks for culturally adapting treatments.


He is the author of the book, Culturally adapting psychotherapy for Asian heritage populations: An evidence-based approach, and the culturally adapted-CBT treatment manual, Improving your mood: A culturally responsive and holistic approach to treating depression in Chinese Americans. He has received numerous career awards and is a Fellow of APA, APA Division 12 (Society for Clinical Psychology), APA Division 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity), Asian American Psychological Association, APA Minority Fellowship Program, and the Western Psychological Association. At his home institution, he has received the Roy P. Crocker Award for Merit and Service to the college, as well as the Claremont Colleges Diversity Mentor Award. Hwang is a licensed clinical psychologist and has an independent clinical and consulting practice in Pasadena and Claremont, California.
